Social Media
Whether it’s TikTok, Pinterest, or Instagram, before every trip I spend time doing research through posts about the destination. I usually start by simply using the search bar and looking up phrases like “best places in ___” or “must-sees in ___.” In just twenty minutes to an hour, I’m able to gather a ton of ideas and potential stops for my trip.
I’ve also found that the most helpful posts often come from everyday people rather than influencers. They tend to share more honest reviews, along with helpful tips, directions, and things they wish they had known before visiting. The best part about using social media as a travel tool is that it’s completely free, travel inspiration and advice have never been more accessible. This is how I’ve discovered some of my favorite spots, including amazing local places that feel far less touristy.

Turo
Turo is my go-to app for renting cars whenever I’m traveling somewhere that requires transportation. I’ve used it on every trip I’ve taken and always recommend it to friends and family. Rental cars can be outrageously priced, especially when you’re trying to travel on a budget, but Turo consistently saves me hundreds of dollars.
Getting started is simple. After downloading the app, you create an account, enter some basic information, and upload your driver’s license along with a photo. Once you’re approved, you can immediately start browsing available cars. Turo works much like Airbnb, local owners list their vehicles, and travelers book them directly. You can message the owner, arrange convenient pickup and drop-off locations, and enjoy more flexibility than traditional rental companies, all at a much lower cost.
I’ll admit, at first it sounded a little too good to be true (and slightly sketchy), but after using it myself, I can confidently say it’s completely legit. If you need a rental car for your next trip, Turo is absolutely worth checking out.

Airbnb
Lastly, there’s Airbnb. To be completely honest, I’ve never actually booked a hotel room… ever. And if you’ve looked at hotel prices in most vacation spots, you probably understand why. As a college student, those prices make my head hurt. While affordability is a huge reason I use Airbnb, it’s not the only one, it’s also far more accommodating than most hotels.
For anyone unfamiliar, Airbnb is an online platform where people rent out their homes or rooms to travelers for short-term stays. Many listings include comfortable beds, full kitchens, parking, and even in-unit washers and dryers, which makes traveling feel much more like living at home. The options are virtually endless, with places available all over the world. Unlike hotels, which are often packed into tourist-heavy areas, Airbnbs can place you right in local neighborhoods, offering a more authentic, flexible, and budget-friendly travel experience.
